Aliza Lelah-Hackman was born in 1982 and grew up just outside of Chicago. She attended the University of Vermont where she majored in Studio Art, spending a period of time in Florence, Italy. It was there that she began exploring the use of fabric in her work. She went on to receive an MFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2007, and now maintains a studio in Denver, Colorado. She shows her work regionally, nationally, and internationally.
This mask is portrait of joy, our dog, Winnie Cooper. Rescued in 2012, Winnie has made leaps and bounds to become who she is today. When she first arrived, she hid under our bed for three weeks, and now, 2 years later, she loves to lay with us, hike off-leash, go rollerblading, and play. This portrait shows her growth, a little bit of the fear she came into our home with, and the wonder moving forward.
