Item Special Note

Bonnie Barney drew for the amusement and satisfaction of school children, but didn’t take up watercolor painting seriously until a trip “Painting in the Steps of the Impressionists” with Dick Kane in 1996. You might spot her painting Keuka Lake landscapes en plein air some fine day as you drive around these hills. Working mostly in watercolor, she began painting more seriously in retirement. Although she has painted on four continents, people request Finger Lakes scenes as their favorites.  Who wouldn’t?

Bonnie has learned watercolor painting by apprenticing to more accomplished artist friends, and by taking classes: at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery’s Creative Workshop from Dick Kane, Jeanne Lindsay, and Fred Lipp; and elsewhere from nationally known teachers such as Don Andrews, Frank Webb, Judy Wagner, Tony VanHasselt, Bill Vrsack, Pat Weaver, Margaret Martin, Elizabeth Apgar Smith, Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson, Karen Rosasco, Susan Webb Tregay, and Ed Steinhilper.

She has painted commissions for The Owens Wildlife Foundation, has provided the logo and art for the Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and her paintings of sailboats on Keuka have graced the suites at the Best Western Vineyard Suites in Penn Yan. She has been honored by the Arts Center of Yates County as “Artist of the Year”.

See her work at The Flick Gallery of the Arts Center of Yates County, 127 Main Street, Penn Yan, on line at www.artscenteryatescounty.org at an annual Art Barn show on Keuka Lake near Penn Yan over July 4th, or at her home studio.
