CREATIVITY RESHAPES THE WORLD
My transition from the hobby of wood-craft to woodturning represents an intuitive leap that opened up a new dimension of creativity for me. The focus and undivided attention needed just to learn the skill and safety measures in placing a sharp cutting tool on a fast rotating block of wood required that I take a large step outside my comfort zone. That first step and all the incremental steps that followed have brought about a change in my DNA. Spending time at my lathe is just as important as my exercise routine.
I attribute my good health during my twelve years of retirement and the abundance of energy I enjoy to this very fulfilling hobby. Each block of wood has its own “personality” and may not be amenable to my shaping intentions. Consequently I am reminded that the life in this “once alive tree” continues to impact others through the new shape and new environment that I give it.
It is at this juncture that creativity surfaces for me. It is in the “doing” where imagination and implementation meet. The shape that results from the cutting tools that I hold in my hands is a life-giving experience: creativity-in-action.
