Item Special Note

Julianna Drumheller. Though I began my artistic studies in painting, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from RIT, I soon learned that my real love was getting my hands dirty in the clay studio.  I took classes at Turk Hill Craft School in Fairport to further my education in ceramics, apprenticing for one of the instructors there.

My love of color and pattern developed out of my painting background and because of that, I have always put special emphasis on the surface, using the clay almost like a canvas. I began to add textural elements, such as slip-trailed designs, to add more structure to the forms and to visually pull the patterns together.  I also dabble in costuming, and some of my influence comes from textiles.  I've always been drawn to the Art Nouveau style, with its use of curved lines and highly decorative elements.  This aesthetic has made its way into my work, causing many people to remark that it looks antique.  However, I believe in making pottery that is fully functional and can be used for everyday enjoyment.  It is hand-thrown on a potter's wheel out of sturdy stoneware, and each piece is safe for use in the dishwasher, microwave, and oven.

I have been selling my work since 2006 and recently moved back to the Rochester area after living in Connecticut for four years.
