On September 10, 1972, LIZA WITH A "Z": A CONCERT FOR TELEVISION premiered on NBC. Reviewed as "sensational with an 'S'," this now legendary concert film, starring Liza Minnelli, directed by Bob Fosse and produced by Fred Ebb and Mr. Fosse, was an audience and ratings smash hit, particularly following Ms. Minnelli's Oscar win as Sally Bowles in the Fosse-directed film of CABARET. The TV special went on to win four Emmys and a Peabody Award. After the initial broadcast, NBC re-ran it twice but it was then not seen for nearly 30 years and the negative thought to be lost. Can you imagine?
An original negative was discovered in 1999. A re-mastered version of LIZA WITH A Z premiered to great acclaim on Showtime on April 1, 2006. (Note: At Ms. Minnelli's request, a theatrical premiere of the program was presented at the New York City's famed Ziegfeld Theater as a benefit for BC/EFA. Thank you, Liza!)
This summer, a one-of-a-kind collection of LIZA WITH A Z photographs, taken by an unidentified photographer and bound in a folder labeled "Bob Fosse" that had once belonged to Gwen Verdon, was donated to BC/EFA by Nicole Fosse, their daughter. When sent to Ms. Minnelli for signing, she nearly fainted, telling us she had always heard of this collection of rehearsal and performance photos but until now had never seen them.
