The artist Geza St Galy, born in Transylvania in 1908, died May 12th, 2003 in Carmel, California at the age of 94.
"Immigrating to the United States in 1951, a strange new world opened its wide horizons. On the East Coast, I still stood under the spell of my classical training and the Bauhaus, but a year later, in Los Angeles, the Western and Mexican as well as the Oriental influence became evident, forming mv style into a new one. In 1954, I opened mv studio in Carmel."
"With an architect's eye, I soon realized the potential of ceramic tile and mosaic in Western Architecture. Relying on my early Italian and Hungarian training, I turned to these media at the expense of painting. The results were gratifying, especially on buildings where I could collaborate with the architect—as the Most Precious Blood Church, Concord and the Carmel Plaza. I have exhibited locally and Statewide, had one-man shows but prefer to use my studio as the main outlet for my work. As a member of my adopted community I have served the Carmel Art Commission since 1959 as Chairman and Deputy Chairman; have organized a contemporary Religious Art Exhibit held with its Bach Festival."
