The Story Behind the Shot: I shot this in the early morning, around 5:30, from a road high up in Topanga, having just come across some coyotes also out for an early hike. I love these dawns—the first light is so fresh. It always makes me realize it is a privilege to walk on the earth and enjoy its beauty, not a right. The Tongva tribe lived here, and Topanga is said to mean “a place above.” Looking down across the layered hills I felt the many centuries of eyes looking through me with calm peace and wonder at this gift of light and landscape.
Artist bio: Photography has always been Caroline (Caro) gray’s passion – even while working in choreography, theater and art galleries. Today, her passion has become her profession. She says the camera is another visual organ – a mode of sensibility in its own right. That sensibility has captured everything from landscapes (often with water elements included) to portraits of people or animals. “The presence of water opens up an emotional range,” she says. “Conveying everything from peaceful reflection to turbulent passion.” With her portraiture, she often captures the transient moment, the play of light and expression across a face, “that is gone so quickly you sometimes don’t even notice – yet, caught at the right moment, reveals much of the inner persona.”
