Item Description

This signed copy of the 256 page full color book, The Painted Screens of Baltimore: An Urban Folk Art Revealed by Elaine Eff  CGP ’75,’76 explores the history of painted window and door screens, A Baltimore tradition with roots in 1700s London and Victorian America and vibrant 21st century digital adoptions as well. Eff’s research began with a discovery in the NYSHA (Fenimore Museum) collections.  Long synonymous with Baltimore rowhouses, painted screens offer privacy and ventilation to those on the inside, and an unexpected, scenic view to those on the outside. The Painted Screens of Baltimore examines this treasure of one of America's major cities, placing them in their proper art historical context through rigorous research and the endearing stories of local Baltimore artists.

Accompanying the book is a  2014  painted screen by Monica Broere, active since the 1980s when she bought her first row house and sought a way to watch birds feeding outside her kitchen window. She apprenticed to the grandson of the founding Oktavec family  of Baltimore screen painting. The scene is her  “mash up” of the iconic red bungalow and colorful modern abstraction.
