Item Description
This wall hanging started out as undyed silk that the artist dyed, screen-printed, deconstructed screen-printed, stamped, painted, and monoprinted. The artist composed outward from the center, adding pieces of silk that had the same surface design techniques. The artist added manipulated photos printed on silk and vintage kimono fabric to complete this piece. Juxtaposing the vintage fabric and modern photos adds another dimension to the already organic complexity of the layered colors and designs of the deconstructed screen-printing process.
The artist, Betsy Morrill, is quoted as saying "my experience as a 'hands-off' textile curator was fulfilling, but creating our own fabric is more rewarding." Each piece by Morril was created in the serene mountains of western North Carolina where the artist moved to simplify their life.
