Item Description
This is a gorgeous quilt, made by Annie Thomas. It is called Manhattan and is just over 5x7ft.
Annie's choice of fabric has an urban feel to it, provided by the blacks and grey solid fabrics. The contrast of both color and pattern are provided in the remaining blocks with the blues and green taken from the multicolored block and dispersed throughout the quilt. The multicolored block not only releases the quilt from complete rigidity of the blocks with the soft swirling shapes, it provides the palette for all of the colors used in the quilt.
The quilt is labeled indicating place and time of making, as is the custom with quilts.
Item Special Note
Annie Thomas, a native of Scotland, first began making quilts soon after she and her family moved to the United States some fifteen years ago.
Following a visit to the Whitney Museum's, "Quilts of the Geesbend", she was inspired by the necessity of these ladies to create art in the most rudimentary conditions and took up the art form.
Annie is specifically interested in the color combination of the fabrics and, although she does not design her own work at this point, she takes great pleasure from the decisions regarding fabric color, texture and placement.
