HORTON MARLAIS DAVIES
The painter
Horton Davies, D.D., D.Phil., D. Lit., born in Wales in 1916, was educated at the universities of Edinburgh and Oxford and minister to Wallington Church in London. The founder of the Religion Department at Grahamstown, South Africa from 1946-1953, he returned to Mansfield College, Oxford, as Head of the Department of Ecclesiastical History. Invited to America, he joined the Department of Religion at Princeton University until he retired in 1984.
The author of some 35 books, Dr. Davies started painting in his free moments, a hobby that he took up full time from 1984 to 2004.
Acrylic was his favorite medium. For his colors and patterns, he was inspired by Van Gogh, Matisse, and Rouault. His main topics were religious subjects (churches, or biblical scenes and characters) and nature - especially flowers. He painted them next to cathedrals; he painted them in their diversity; he painted them in their stylized idiosyncrasy.
