Taxodium X ‘T406’ is one of SFA Gardens advanced selections, a selection from the breeding program of the Nanjing Botanical Garden, Nanjing, China. A cross of Montezuma cypress and Bald cypress, this clone was originally selected for salt and alkalinity tolerance, good form, fast growth rate, and no knees. Foliage is held on the tree long into the winter. Trees have a growth rate of five to six feet per year. The tree in this image was planted in Jan 2012 and in August 2014 had a height of 11 feet and a trunk diameter exceeding five inches at 6 inches above the soil line. We recommend full sun, a well drained soil, and good irrigation frequency during the critical establishment years. Because these are cutting grown, good form comes only with good training. As is the strategy in China where millions of the hybrids are planted, we recommend that all side branches should be cut to the central trunk to form a good leader.
