Item Description

One of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th Century, LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and for appearing in the Disney film, FANTASIA. He was especially noted for his free-hand conducting style that spurned the traditional baton, and for obtaining a characteristically sumptuous sound from the orchestras he directed.

In America, Stokowski performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the NBC Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony of the Air and many others. He was also the founder of the All-American Youth Orchestra, the New York City Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra.

This letter to Patricia Neway's husband was typed on Stokowski's personal stationary and is signed at the bottom. This piece also includes the original envelope the letter was sent in.

Item Special Note

The letter was part of the collection of memorabilia accumulated by Tony Award-winner and Opera Star Patricia Neway (the original Mother Abbess in THE SOUND OF MUSIC) during her storied career. Upon her death, the collection was bequeathed to her nephew, Jeff  Twine, who then donated a portion of it to The National Music Theater Network (dba The New York Musical Theatre Festival) in June 2014.
