Item Description

This drawing was inspired by the 1950 Pulitzer Prize winning opera by Gian-Carlo Menotti entitled THE CONSUL. Artist Judith Foster saw it performed in New York, and was immediately shaken by its poignant story of a family striving to escape from an iron-curtain country in Europe. She attended 33 performances of the opera and "translated" the story into a collection of about 50 images that capture the opera's powerful, dark tone. The intricate detail and painstaking technique that is such a trademark of Judith's work is very evident in the piece.

This is a framed, original print with text from the opera written in pencil and signed by the artist.

Item Special Note

The lithograph negative of the rendering by Foster is also included with this item.

Framed print measures 21.5" x 27" in a wood frame.

The silk screen was part of the collection of memorabilia accumulated by Tony Award-winner and Opera Star Patricia Neway (the original Mother Abbess) during her storied career. Upon her death, the collection was bequeathed to her nephew, Jeff  Twine, who then donated a portion of it to The National Music Theater Network (dba The New York Musical Theatre Festival) in June 2014.
