Item Description

In Gaston Leroux's original novel, he mentions on numerous occassions that Erik's voice had the capability of being both as loud as thunder and as soft as a whisper when he saw fit. I wanted to take this into consideration when creating my mask, which I modeled after a traditional Venetian masquerade mask. At the base of the mask there is a field of red, very saturated to show the base passion that drives everything Erik does. Then there is the sheet music of 'Masquerade' on a parchment-colour which I see as the theme of Phantom's story, a beautiful romanticising of hiding 'your face so the world will never find you.' The top half of the eye has a shadow of black ink to show Erik's mystery and a papier mache rose on the forehead, also in hyper saturation, once again bringing in the love and passion Erik holds for Christine. All of these elements are slightly obscured by cracks in the mask's facade that symbolize both Erik's literal physical flaws and also gives hints of the beauty of his soul breaking through said flaws. Going around the outer edge and the bottom section of the mask are golden intersecting lines, which are a staple design of traditional masquerade masks. I kept with a color scheme that is found in the Opera itself: red, black and gold; and tried to use it in a way that was both soft and loving and passionate and dark, as is Erik himself.
