Item Description

Using recurring symbols and other aspects from both the musical and movie, my mask primarily conveys the theme of The Phantom of the Opera. The crosshatching sketch lines, which are used as a technique for shading and outlining, represent the Phantom's devotion to self-expression and the arts. This also expresses how the Phantom views himself as well as how he views life outside of his lair: dark, drab, and ugly. The blood and shattered mirror represent the intense fury and death within the story. The tears represent the Phantom's sadness and loneliness, as well as his passion and feelings for Christine. Although these are sorrowful aspects of the story, they create something new as shown on the mask. The Phantom's music, as well as a rose, grew from the bloodshed and tears, and this expresses the idea that passion, beauty and joy can arise from the worst of horror, sadness and misery.

Item Special Note
