Item Description
This gift will be of particular interest to water ecology enthusiasts or a grandchild who is interested in science or for an avid angler. Paul Steen is offering a 2 hour training session in sampling and identifying aquatic insects and bugs. Think of this as a two-hour bug camp, and Paul is willing to instruct individuals, a family, or a group of friends on this item. The participants will meet Paul at a river site once the weather warms up, learn how to look for aquatic insects and bugs, and get pointers on how to identify them.
Stream-bottom macroinvertebrates are a link in the aquatic food chain. In most streams, the energy stored by plants is available to animal life, either in the form of leaves that fall in the water or in the form of algae that grows on the stream bottom. The algae and leaves are eaten by macroinvertebrates. The macroinvertebrates are a source of energy for larger animals such as fish, which in turn are a source of energy for birds, raccoons, water snakes, and even fishermen.

Bug Camp must be scheduled in July or August of 2014, with a maximum of 10 people.
Paul joined HRWC in 2008. He analyzes and reports on the data collected by our Adopt-A-Stream volunteers and provides scientific and educational support to several HRWC programs. He is the program manager of the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps), a state-wide program focused on volunteer monitoring in lakes and streams. Paul earned his Master of Science and Ph.D. from the School of Natural Resources, University of Michigan, where he focused on landscape ecology, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and fish community ecology. He lives in the Horseshoe Creekshed.
