Item Description
NFB of Colorado has donated this piece of groundbreaking artwork by Ann Cunningham.
This original slate sculpture is the very first example of a chammed or two-sided low relief sculpture. The profile was cut completely free of the background. Since this tactile work of art is carved on both sides, when you look with your hands you can see both sides at the same time, giving the illusion that it is more three dimensional than it actually is. The potential that this technique offers for making sculptures and pictures is unbound. Chammed sculptures were introduced to the public for the first time at the Denver Art Museum, in the summer of 2014. New pieces will be exhibited in Orlando at the NFB 75th Anniversary Convention. They will also be featured in the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, in December 2015.
Sculpture, however, is just the first application of what this technique makes possible. Ann is now exploring how this can be applied to pictures for books to make complex information easier to interpret by using both sides of the page at the same time.
Ann Cunningham was a recipient of the 2012 Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award for her innovative work in this field. She also received the Sydney Parkinson Award from the Denver Botanic Gardens' Botanical Art and Illustration program for her work introducing access to information through art.
Be the leader of the pack and purchase this important, unique sculpture for your collection.
