South Sudan became a sovereign state in 2011, separating from the persecution by the Sudanese government and the Janjawid, from many of the Darfur stories you've read. This achievement came with the impact of the injuries and devastation of generations of occupation, war, and persecution. And just as they were struggling to emerge into autonomy, the people were set back by political leaders instigating a civil war. Over 1.5 million are living as refugees and 4 million face starvation. Forces on both sides are conscripting child soldiers and targeting civilians, using rape and arbitrarily killing people based on ethnic group.

MBB is currently in the initial phases of a peace-building initiative to support the communities of South Sudan. South Sudanese youth have invited us to provide conflict skills to help other youth resist the enticement to go to war, and to build communities, resilience to the current suffering and be able to thrive after the violence is conquered.

To inoculate against violence and strengthen communities, MBB intends to assist in Western Equatoria state to develop and integrate conflict management skills and trauma resilience, this could be in radio broadcasts, education, ex-combatant programs, or community networks.

MBB is entering the work that is toughest to fund, the assessment, where we gather reliable information about the true root causes, at the source, and create lasting partnerships that ensure that communities are in charge of how this project unfolds and can carry it forward long after we are gone.
