Item Description
Renowned author and long-time Shambhala Sun contributor Alice Walker shares her writings with this year's bidders. The book featured in this offering is The Cushion in the Road: Meditation and Wandering as the Whole World Awakens to Being in Harm?s Way, meditations on our intertwined personal, spiritual, and political destinies.
Ms. Walker, best known for the Pulitzer Prize-wining novel The Colour Purple, has been contributing to the Shambhala Sun for 15 years going back to 1997 with a feature discussion entitled "The Power of Loving Kindness." Editor-in-Chief Melvin McLeod described her as "a committed social activist who has had the courage to take on difficult and often unspoken issues." In 2007 Ms. Walker's "Suffering too Insignificant for the Majority to See" written on the occasion of the first-ever African-American Buddhist retreat appeared in the May issue of the Shambhala Sun. "Alice Walker describes the great toll, both personal and societal, of racism in America, and how Buddhism has helped her heal its wounds."
