North Cascades Institute Field Excursion:
Salmon and Eagles in the Upper Skagit Valley
December 6th, 2014 8:30-5:00
Excursion details at North Cascades Institute
Experience one of the most fascinating natural dramas in the North Cascades when hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Skagit River to feast on the Puget Sound's rich salmon runs.
This trip will focus on the Upper Skagit River as the abundance of chum salmon reaches its apex, and the eagle numbers are swelling to feed on them. You will examine the intertwined biology of salmon and eagles, their migratory patterns and the impacts they have on other flora and fauna. You'll also learn about local conservation strategies for these keystone species.
North Cascades Institute seeks to inspire closer relationships with nature through direct experiences in the natural world. Our mission is to conserve and restore Northwest environments through education. Since 1986, we have helped connect people, nature and community through science, art, literature and the hands-on study of the natural and cultural history of the Pacific Northwest.
North Cascade Institute offers a wide variety of routes to get people of all ages outside in the wild nearby. Whether from the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center on Diablo Lake or special field excursions exploring the Skagit and Methow valleys, Seattle, Bellingham, the Salish Sea and beyond, we revel in the natural and cultural history of this special region.
