Item Description
Framed and autographed historic photo of NRWA's founder, Marion Stoddart, standing on the banks of the polluted Nashua River in Fitchburg in 1970. From the photo files of the Record American Newspaper dated April 30, 1970. Subject line is " Pollution of Nashua River" and the description reads " Mrs. Hugh Stoddart of Groton, leader of the drive to clean up the Nashua River is shown standing on the banks of the river in Fitchburg. Floating in the river is paper scum from nearby paper mills and assorted debris."
This photo was taken at the beginning of the efforts to clean-up the Nashua River, only months after the founding of the Nashua River Watershed Association. The restoration efforts would prove to be an international success story, recognized by the United Nations, President Richard Nixon, and National Geographic. It is a story that continues to inspire environmental efforts to this day.
