Item Description
Award winning Giclee: Art Print on canvas, made with archival fade resistant inks. "The Sunken Tiki" was painted by our very own Big Island's internationally acclaimed Artist Brad "Tiki Shark" Parker. Brad paints what is called "Low-Brow Art" about Modrn Tiki-Culture. He does so from the most remote land mass in the world: the Big Island of Hawaii.
"The Sunken Tiki" is one of the award winning images voted BEST OF by Spectrum - The Best in Contemporary Art.
About the Artist - Brad "Tiki Shark" Parker
The idea for this painting came to me as I was snorkeling off the Kona coast and watching schools of fish take on interesting shapes - so in the painting the fish form a Lei around the TIKI's neck.
Brad has worked in several types of media: writing, penciling, inking, coloring, and editing comic books from small publishers right up to the industry's leaders: Marvel and DC Comics. He's also held a top of the scale union job in Hollywood as a Senior Production Artist and worked on everything from Mountain Dew Commercials for the Superbowl, to Music Videos of OZZY, to Big Hollywood films like "Dream Girls".
Brad moved to Hawaii where he began directing the art side of his company - Tiki Shark Art Hawaii Inc. - and painting his interpretations of the Modern Tiki sub-culture. Tiki Art is referred to as "Low-Brow Art" as opposed to "High Brow" or "Fine" Art, because it references modern or pop culture. You don't need a higher degree in Art from a University to understand this type of Art. It's friendly Art for the average guy on the street, or the beach. Low-Brow Art has seen tremendous popularity in the [mainland] West Coast Art scene since the 1990's.
Brad Parker's style is reminiscent of the old Flemish masters, but with counter-culture subject matter from a childhood of adoring comic books, cartoons, and Universal monster movies. A unique American culture of television, comics, the Hawaiian craze of the 1950's and 60's (plus its re-emergence as hipster-retro-kitsch), all go into the Polynesian Pop-Art of this new work.
Brad's Art is shown locally at the "Kona Oceanfront Gallery" in Kailua-Kona. The Artist has lectured at the University of Hawaii on "Tiki-Culture", and every few years releases a show of new work at the birth place of the Low-Brow Art Movement: The World Famous "La Luz De Jesus Gallery" in Los Angeles. His next show there is set for July 2016.
About Tiki Shark
ARTIST"S STATEMENT: My art is my personal celebration of a creative reinvention of a foolish misinterpretation of an ancient mythology that sought to solve the mystery of the "breath of life" that eternally, and precariously, surfs the complete expanse between the bottomless sea and the floating shadow land of preexistence in the inconceivable heights of the sky.
