Item Description

An intimate introduction to the birds of the North Shore:

Have you ever wanted to know more about the birds in your area, but felt overwhelmed by the prospect?  Join songbird biologist Ben Flemer to learn a little more about the birds of the North Shore.  Ben has been studying songbirds since 1999 and is currently employed by Massachusetts Audubon Society Joppa Flats Education Center.  Limited to four participants, this  three hour tour will cover the basics of binocular use and the skills used to identify birds by sight and sound.  You don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the amazing diversity of bird life in and around your backyard!

This walk with focus on Spring Migration: May 18th, 2015 (inclement weather date May 19th, 2015).

After a cold winter, warm up with the flood of spring migrants as they race to their breeding grounds farther to the north, or stake out their territories right here on the north shore!  The third week of May is the peak of warbler migration and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island is a great place to sit back and watch the parade of birds in all their colors!   Learn how these tiny birds are able to migrate such long distances for only a few short months out of the year.  We will meet at the Joppa Flats Education center, located at 1 Plum Island Turnpike at 8am and proceed to Plum Island.
