An Oil Painting by local artist, Ken McIndoe.
Every painting tells a story. The story Grand and Allen (18x22") by local artist, Ken McIndoe, tells of his love of painting the streets of the lower east side of New York City. A love that began in the 1960's and continues to this day.
Ken lived in New York City in the 1960's and 1970's and delighted in painting street scenes in the the warm summer months. He would begin to paint after breakfast, and aside from breaks for lunch and dinner, would paint all day, often finishing the day with a night scene. This painting of Grand Street and Allen Street, on the lower east side, was painted on a hot summer day, and is a wonderful example of his work in that part of the city. It shows tenement buildings that housed immigrants from the late 1800's, and possibly house still, immigrants who, in Ken's words, "hope to better their lives in this nation."
In all likelihood, these buildings will be torn down and there will be another forgetting, just as there was with the farmlands once there that are now covered and gone. Thankfully, because of Ken, streets such as Grand and Allen will not be forgotten, but will continue to live beautifully through his paintings.
Ken has traveled to and lived in many parts of the world and now lives with his wife, clay artist Connie Bracci-McIndoe, in Hopewell, where he also has his studio.
When not painting or enjoying one of his many other artistic pursuits, Ken teaches at The Arts Students League of New York.
Ken is aso a Stampede artist, and created "Ox for All Seasons."
