WHAT IS HOME PRUNING INSTRUCTION?
Do your good intentions with regard to your plants sometimes go awry?
Did someone give you a brand-new, impressive-looking pair of hand pruners for your birthday…and they have become a sort of knick-knack in your tool shed?
Do you sometimes stand in front of your shrubs with your head cocked to the side thinking, “Aye, aye, aye. Should I take out this branch—no, maybe this one. Ohh, was that too much?”
Has your neighbor(s) looked at you with disdain and accused you of leaving “stubs” on your shrubs?
If any of these apply to you and all you want is to do what is best for your plants,
then Home Pruning Instruction is for you!
Many of my clients have taken a pruning class (or two!), but have trouble translating what they have learned to their own plants. That’s because pruning is more than just cutting. It is part of the science and art of arboriculture.
With customized lessons in your own garden, you can learn to prune your own woody vines, shrubs, and small trees. We will be learning the art of selective pruning. After removing deadwood (and finding out why this is so important), we’ll start shaping your green friends into healthier plants that maintain the integrity if their species. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of professional tools—for big hands, small hands, lefty hands, and for every budget. You can ask all the questions you like about your plants and make pruning cuts, all under the guidance of a professional horticulturist and arborist.
WHAT HOME PRUNING INSTRUCTION IS NOT:
- Hedging/shearing: No matter how much you beg me, I will not aid and abet you in turning your evergreens into cubes, cupcakes, or elephants. However, I can teach you the first steps in transforming your maimed plants into the more natural habit of their species.
- Chainsaw class: You’ve gotta walk before you can run, no? No chainsaws, folks.
