Item Description
This is a simply outstanding English Regency Period Letter Box with a Calendar and many hidden spaces. Crafted of solid mahogany, the two doors open to reveal a large orderly interior. The center of the desk features levels of letter slots, which scroll out with fine scalloped form over a concave pen holder that can be pressed on either side to reveal a hidden compartment. Flanking the pen holder are a pair of replaced glass inkwells. At the top of the case is a calendar box, the little wooden knobs turning to change the day and date. This box lifts out of the case to reveal a hidden space below. The left-hand panel has stretched twine secured by rivets for holding notes and documents, lifting and closing over original brass hinges with hand-filed screws - this same theme is repeated in all of the hardware which is hand-cast brass with hand-filed screws throughout.
