Item Description
Mann parent Jo Anne Nelson is co-author of a new book, Heritage: Honoring Our Hospitals' Early Years in the Nation's Capital!
The District of Columbia is privileged to house some of the most prominent hospitals and health care research facilities in the nation. Many of the city's present health care systems were created in the 19th century to treat wounded civilians and soldiers during the Civil War, and involved prominent historical figures, religious institutions, and Congressional action.
Before the Civil War, the District of Columbia had five hospitals; during that war, the number swelled to 53. Heritage explores the rich history of our city's hospitals, and includes incredible photographs from the Library of Congress, the Historical Society of D.C., and many others.
