Item Description

19x13 inch framed first page of piece commissioned by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Young Artists Orchestra, signed by WVYS alum and composer Matt Jackfert.

On the Shores of Qingdao reflects the composer's visit to the seaside city of Qingdao located in the Shandong Province of China.  On the shore, the waves and wind are at play while the sounds of nearby street performers linger in the air.  These performers are playing the melodies that they've always known:  Shandong folk songs.  YiMeng Shan and XiuHe Bao are two of the melodies that stand out among the others. These human and natural forces blend together into a dramatic and spectacular storm for the observer - a storm that builds up and fades away like the tide.

This piece was premiered on May 2, 2014 byt the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra at the Clay Center.  It was performed alongside Antonio Modarelli's River Saga, which reflected a foreigner's visit to West Virginia.  On the Shores of Qingdao, in contrast, was a reflection of a West Virginian's visit to a foreign land.  It was performed again the following day on May 3rd, 2014 and again at the Eastern Music Festival in July 2014 in Greensboro, NC.
