About Cactus Flower Shoe Store

When I first began Cactus Flower Shoes, I was a young single mom with three hungry children and no money. I literally started my own shoe store on a shoestring. I had never worked for any one else in the retail business and had no idea what I was doing. Had I have known then what I know now, I would have never mortgaged my home, which was the only thing I had that was worth any thing. A banker friend of mine gave me a second trust deed for $17,000.00. With this meager amount of money, I boldly started my business in 1977. I won't go into detail about the intense struggle that ensued. I diligently showed up everyday and sometimes it was so slow that I actually would fall asleep on the floor. I had no idea that only 7% of small businesses make it for 10years.

I was a quick learner and my customers taught me a lot about shoes and feet and then some of my vendors came to my rescue and taught me things about shoes. I had a real sense of budget and ran the small 600 square foot shop like I did my home. I was a great salesperson and made a friend of every lady that came in.

Little by little I built a small loyal clientele. After 13 years in my small location, I outgrew the small space and moved down the street to a store twice the size. I always continued to make my customers feel like a queen and many more ladies were now a part of this thriving little business. My whole goal in business was to always be a Woman of Noble character, not only with the customers I served, but also with my vendors and other merchants.

The word began to get around that I would never sell a pair of shoes that did not fit right and I would even work on a pair of leather shoes to create a custom fit. I always gave money back to a customer if they were not happy with their purchase and always treated them sweet.

We are now known as the busiest shop on El Paseo, in Palm Desert, CA. All employees are trained in the beginning that the customer is queen. They cannot work at our shop if they cannot adopt this principal. This is what has made Cactus Flower successful.

We invite our employees to open each day with prayer as we acknowledge God and ask for his presence in our shop.

I will continue to serve my community and employees with a wonderful knowledge of the shoe business and how to fit people properly, and treat them in such a way that they will always want to come back to Cactus Flower Shoe Salon.

Thank You,

Velma Hagar-Otterman
