Item Description
Fourth graders take the classic writing process into the digital age. They start by learning about and practicing brainstorming, drafting, editing, peer editing, and publishing. They also are introduced to the idea of writing for an audience, not just themselves or the teacher.
The project moves beyond creative writing as the students translate their written work into interactive video games using Scratch, a programming language. Students practice the thinking processes inherent in giving a computer commands and have early success that lends itself to student inquiry, creativity, and challenge. Through this process, they move beyond browsing, chatting, and interacting online to designing, creating, and remixing. Whether storyboarding to create a movie or using a character and plot as the basis for a video game, students are gaining experience integrating the writing process with programming.
