"Amid soulful Americana restaurants and baked goods in the Upper West Side’s brunch corridor, Bustan brings hummus bowls, smoked eggplants, and spiced lamb. Standout dishes make use of the taboon oven (the Middle Eastern pizza-oven counterpart), like a charred-octopus appetizer mixed with a white-bean puree and green harissa. Notably, flatbreads fall into fusion territory (pastrami with parmesan and egg yolks), as do entrées, which take popular bistro foods to the Mediterranean and back. Beets roasted in the taboon get tossed with shaved fennel, nigella seeds, grilled haloumi, and pine nuts; lamb in kebab form comes alongside grilled vegetables, tahini, and pistachios all baked in bread. Better bets include Bustan’s creamy hummus bowl, which you can top with falafel or tender braised beef cheeks and is served with fresh flatbread from the taboon. Space is a tad cramped in this plush dining room, but vibrant celebrity portraits from Israeli artist Dganit Blechner and a wall brimming with robotlike clocks offer excellent conversation starters." — Jessica Chou
