Item Description

In Fall 2014, in collaboration with Classrooms Without Borders, WT hosted a Day of Learning on resistance and dissent featuring the White Rose Exhibit, a national traveling exhibit commemorating the heroism of a German student movement that urged nonviolent resistance to the Nazi government in 1942-1943. More than 200 students gathered from five area schools to view the exhibit, hear a keynote address by Dr. Anne Nelson, Columbia University professor and scholar on German resistance studies and human rights, and participate in discussions led by WT faculty.

Twenty-five Upper School students from WT’s “Genocide and Holocaust Studies,” course along with 30 eighth graders, joined students from Bethel Park, Chartiers Valley, Community Day School, and St. Edmunds for the event. The day featured Dr. Nelson’s keynote address, a gallery tour, and breakout sessions facilitated by Dr. Joshua Andy, Upper School History teacher, and Dr. Michael Naragon, History Department Chair. Following the event, Dr. Andy’s “Genocide and Holocaust Studies” class hosted the guest speakers for lunch.

This is one example of the powerful ways in which Dr. Andy’s Genocide and Holocaust Studies course brings history and contemporary issues to life.
