Meyer Family Cellars is located on Hwy 128, between the towns of Yorkville and Boonville in Mendocino County. While they may be best known for their Port-style fortified wine which is made from old-vine Zinfandel, Meyer Family also make four dry wines. These include an Anderson Valley Chardonnay, a Bonny’s Vineyard (Napa Valley) Cabernet Sauvignon, a rosé of Syrah and the “regular” Syrah reviewed below. The wines are made jointly by the husband and wife team of Matt and Karen Meyer.
The 2006 Meyer Family Syrah Mendocino County is opaque ruby and shows dark plum, blackberry, whiskey barrel, tobacco, clove and black pepper on the nose. The flavors echo the aromas with black fruit, dark spice, tobacco, and whiskey barrel but also a hint of cherry. Wood influences aside, the wine is very well balanced with medium plus body, tannins and alcohol along with a good measure of acidity for a Syrah, owing to the relatively cool climate. 2006 is the current vintage of this wine. While it showed admirable complexity and plenty of fruit, the oak influence is still very strong. Letting the wine rest in your cellar for at least a couple of years should allow that oak to soften and integrate. Drink 2012 through 2018. Highly Recommended.
