Item Description

Enjoy this handcrafted bowl created by Raleigh artist Marsha Owen.

What started with a pottery course under John Givvines at the North Carolina State Craft center turned into a career for Marsha Owen. “I was a slow learner - I took the beginner’s course three times - but I knew almost immediately that this was work I wanted to pursue.” She has been a self-employed potter for over thirty years and maintains her interest by always being open to new ideas and techniques. “There is always something to learn from the clay.” She has participated in many workshops and spent a year as a resident potter at Penland School. Her husband, Rick Moss, has worked with her in the business for the last twenty years and adds his handbuilding and relief carving skills to the work. They own a home and studio in Raleigh, North Carolina.

She works extensively with colored slips (liquid clay), stains, underglazes, and various resist techniques in addition to the more conventional glaze application by dipping or spraying.

Pottery is a constantly challenging craft. My goal is to meet that challenge while producing pots that work and are pleasing to the eye. Function is most important: it must do what it is supposed to do, and do it well.

It is very satisfying to me when someone comments that they are still using a pot I made for them long ago. That means I have succeeded and that perhaps the profession I chose for myself over 30 years ago is the right one after all!

Being a potter is a job and, like any job, requires hard work and perseverance for which I am repaid with fulfillment as well as an income.
