Item Description

This book from 1793 is a beautiful piece of history!  "A Voyage to Madagascar and the East Indies" by The Abbe Rochon is a rare gem that includes M. Brunel's memoir on the Chinese trade.  From Abebooks.com it reads:

"The first edition was 1792. Alexis-Marie de Rochon, known as Abbé Rochon, was born in Brest, France in 1741 and died in Paris in 1817. He was a French astronomer, physicist and traveler. He traveled to Africa on an exploring mission to determine the possibility of establishing new trading posts for commerce with the East Indies and China. His trip, journal, and the mapping of the island Madagascar was one of the first from a European. He is also known for his work on lens design and crystal optics, inventing the Rochon prism polarizer."

It was illustrated with an original map of Madagascar, which was drawn by M. Robert, but unfortunately it is missing.  Translated from the French by Joseph Trapp, A.M.  The texture and color of the cover is enough to make me swoon.

Book enthusiast and history lovers, don't miss this opportunity to own this priceless beauty!

Item Special Note

Note: Binding is coming off of the pages.  It looks to have had some tape rehabilitation on the binding.  Torn first page, missing map, other pages in good condition.  Confirmed: Very old!
