Item Description

The artist, Thomas A. Barber, was born in Connecticut in October 1935, thus is a Scorpio. His early life was highly influenced by this grandfather who was a very successful engineer. So young Thomas went to college and became a rocket scientist.

His first career was spent at a laboratory of the California Institute of Technology called the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Somewhere along the way, a personality test showed what he knew all along...that he should have been something other than a rocket scientist.

An opportunity to study watercolor at Pasadena City College with Verna Wells confirmed that an alternative life might be available. Early retirement in 1992 provided the change to move, with his wife Ida, to the Monterey Peninsula where he continued his watercolor studies with Anita DeCarlo, Jane Flury and Jane Miller.

He is a recent member of the Central Coast Art Association, had had his first show, and is addicted to showing his paintings. His immediate goal is to paint 1000 watercolors, whereupon he can decide if he will continue. By his count, he has exceeded 350. His continuing goal is to see the beauty of the earth and share his view with any and all.
