Built in 1881 by the wealthy ship merchant and businessman John E. Sise, 40 Court Street is a classic example of a Queen Anne Victorian architecture. The Stick Style mansion is located in historic Haymarket Square and is a monument to Victorian success. Later owned by the antiquarian minister of the South Church, Alfred Gooding, the mansion was expanded upon in 1985 and opened as the Sise Inn. An elaborate, historically sensitive, six month renovation of the property was completed in April 2014 prior to re-opening as The Hotel Portsmouth.
