Item Description
Since the theme for this year's auction was the Orient Express we decided to create a train table that had some association to the major landmarks along the train's many routes. The table came from Boston Wood and the blocks were cut from 2x4s at F.D. Sterritt Lumber, both in Watertown. The train and boxes are from Ikea and the paints used on the table were no-VOC paints Kristin already had—and she was really happy to have such a great blue color for the Blue Room! We wanted the train table to be flexible in design and in play for the kids, so we kept the table decor simple and train pieces detached from the table so they could be configured in how ever many ways kids could imagine. For that reason we also thought that, rather than decorating the table itself, the Blue Room friends might enjoy painting blocks with world landmarks, things from nature, basic architecture, etc. that could then be placed around the tracks as they go on their imaginary adventures on the Orient Express.
The Blue Room friends enjoyed learning about the Orient Express and the routes it traveled. They used the continent maps of Europe and Asia to talk about the different countries and cities the Orient Express traveled to! Jenny and Sarah displayed pictures of the great landmarks of these cities such as the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Parthenon. Some friends were excited to recreate these famous structures. Others enjoyed painting patterns and shapes. The children used acrylic paint and some added detail such as windows and doors with sharpie. The Blue Room loved creating structures and people for the train table as well as learning about the Orient Express!!
We think the train table will provide a lot of fun, imaginative play for kids and will also be a flexible piece of furniture that will fit into any decor.
