Item Description

Organise your entrance or mud-room and bring colour and brightness to it at the same time!
The organiser has a wooden frame and can be hung on a wall. It has a chalkboard in the centre for jotting down your to do list, hooks on either side of the frame for hanging those keys you are always looking for and three envelope-sized organiser boxes in which to store your post, kids' gloves, sunglasses etc. Each of these compartments has a small metal frame for a name tag. There are also three hooks underneath for hanging coats, small bags or other light items.
The project entailed decorating the plain white frame with mosaic tiles. The yellow room children took turns in pairs, selecting the tiles and sticking them to the frame on the particular area they were working on. They were all very engrossed in it and many came back for a second round. Some worked in order, applying the same colour tiles one after the other, while others went random. Many of the children volunteered what each colour represented for them, with plenty of imagination: seaweed, corn, daffodils, etc., while others turned the task into a true work of art with meaning behind it: "this is going to be the mouth, and it is wide open!". We had plenty of questions: Why are you sticking them in this order? Why are you leaving spaces in between? Why are you filling up the spaces? etc. We also practiced counting in different ways: "one mississippi, two mississippi" and counting right up to 500 while waiting for the tiles to stick to the surface. Once the children had finished the moms filled the remaining spaces with grout and showed off the end product to the yellow room to much acclaim.
