Item Description

Lapel Pin & Beautiful 2015 National Cherry Blossom Festival Poster: size is 18x24

Our artist for 2015 is Jing Jing Tsong.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival has selected Jing Jing Tsong from the Big Island, Hawaii as the 2015 Official Artist. She is critically acclaimed for her illustration work that combines traditional printmaking and digital techniques to create vibrant compositions of color, pattern and texture. Jing Jing created a one-of-a-kind piece exclusively for the National Cherry Blossom Festival (pictured at right). An annual collectors item, the artwork will be on the official poster and various merchandise.

Jing Jing used apochoirtechnique to create intricate blossoms from the iconic cherry blossom shape. The technique was refined by the Japanese in the Edo period and is comparable to a very fine stencil. The patterns incorporated in the tree trunk and the large blossoms in the background were made from a traditional block printing technique, adding layers of meaning to each image. The stylized wood thrushes also help welcome spring.

I remember springtime as a rich sensory experience, said Jing Jing. In the artwork, I tried to capture the idea of nature waking up from a long winter slumber with song and color, the branches of the tree reaching out to embrace the warmth of the season.

Jing Jings images have been featured in national and international design magazines includingGraphisandCommunication Arts. Her illustrations appear in theNew York Timesbest-selling childrens picture book, A Bucket of Blessings by Kabir Seghal and Surishtha Seghal. Her artwork is featured in twoForeverstampsfrom the U.S. Postal Service as part of the 2014 Winter Fun series released earlier this month. A mom, musician and surfer, Jing Jing was born in Pennsylvania and currently lives on the Big Island of Hawaii with her husband.
