It sure didn’t take long.

Soon after its fall 2012 release, ZZ Ward’s debut album “Til the Casket Drops” went Top 10 on iTunes’ Alternative chart. The previously unknown singer-songwriter made the rounds on late night TV including The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson and The Tonight Show. She sold out 40 dates of her 2013 “Down and Dirty Shine” tour and became a fan favorite at Firefly, Sasquatch, SXSW and Bumbershoot. The multi-talented singer, who also plays guitar, piano and harmonica, came out of nowhere and struck a chord.

2014 is promising to be an even bigger breakthrough year as ZZ makes her debut at Coachella and Bonnaroo, opens for Eric Clapton and launches her third headline U.S. run with her ”Last Love” Tour.

Critics have floated many descriptions of her music, but none quite did her justice. Steeped in blues, soul and roots rock, ZZ defies any precise category, which is just how she likes it.  “People wanna know what my music is, because they’re comfortable with what they know,” she says, “but I’m just doing what’s authentic to me.”

The Pennsylvania-born and Oregon-raised singer got her start at age 12, performing in her father’s blues band. At 16, she was introduced to hip-hop (thanks to her older brother’s CD collection) and was hooked, eventually working her way into hip-hop clubs in Eugene, OR,  and performing with local artists. It took time before she fully established her own bracing single-malt style but once she did, she got noticed.

A chance discovery by songwriter-producer Evan “Kidd” Bogart on MySpace, led her to sign with his Boardwalk Entertainment Group and in 2011, she signed with Hollywood Records.  While recording her debut album, she released an eclectic mixtape, Eleven Roses, a calling card of sorts featuring ZZ’s original music layered over the beats of some of her favorite hip-hop artists including Childish Gambino, Freddie Gibbs and Tyler, The Creator.  A 4-song EP, “Criminal,” followed featuring Freddie Gibbs who had heard her take on his song, “Oil Money.”

In October 2012, ZZ released her debut album, Til The Casket Drops to wide critical acclaim with many outlets including NPR and USA Today calling her “a star.”  The album spun-off two hit singles, “Put The Gun Down” and “365 Days.”  Now on the eve of her third headlining tour, ZZ has released her third single, and fan favorite, “Last Love Song.”

Additionally, ZZ’s songs have been in high demand with 8 out of the 13 songs from her debut album being tapped by music supervisors.  In fact, to date, her songs have been licensed over 70 times for use in film, TV and high-profile sporting events on FOX, CBS, ABC, MTV, VH1, CW, NBC, A&E and more.

And, while the tastemakers have been quick to champion ZZ --the Village Voice calling her “a force of nature” and The New York Times comparing her to Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Etta James -- all the attention and frenzied pace have not gotten to ZZ.  Instead it’s just further affirmation that sticking to her musical instincts are paying off.
