Item Description

Bachardy is famous not only as a lifelong companion to the late English novelist Christopher Isherwood, but also as a fine art painter and portraitist. His works reside in the permanent collections of several museums and galleries including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University, the California State Capitol Building (official portrait of Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr.), the Smithsonian Institute, and the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Having lived in Hollywood all his life, he has had the opportunity to know and paint many of the city's luminaries. Hollywood is Bachardy's magnum opus, a five-decade retrospective of the artist's portrait drawings and paintings. A stunning compendium of Hollywood's influential actors, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, costumers, choreographers, composers, columnists, producers, and agents.

[Hollywood] is a tribute to [Bachardy’s] age and experience, which has taught him where to look for truth in the quiet moments that pass between him and another human. - Los Angeles Times
