PROGRAM
Orpheus with Jan Vogler & Mira Wang
MENDELSSOHN: Overture To A Midsummer Night's Dream
RIHM: Concerto for Violin and Cello (WORLD PREMIERE)
SCHUMANN: Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61
Orpheus begins its season with the effervescent Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, composed in Berlin by the seventeen-year-old Felix Mendelssohn after Shakespeare’s fanciful tale of misplaced love and new beginnings. Twenty years later in nearby Dresden, Robert Schumann—with the support of his devoted wife, Clara—emerged from a crippling depression with new focus and resolve. Together, they studied J. S. Bach’s counterpoint (much of it penned close by in Leipzig), a labor that shaped the course of Schumann’s triumphant Second Symphony. Composer Wolfgang Rihm continues that strong German lineage with a new double concerto for Orpheus, featuring cellist Jan Vogler and violinist Mira Wang—partners in marriage as well as music.
