BRAHMS
Piano Concerto No. 1
BEETHOVEN
Symphony No. 7
We begin with the extraordinary Garrick Ohlsson and his marvelous rendition of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. Leading this youthful and vigorous early work—the composer wrote it when he was just 25—is our esteemed Conductor Laureate, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, approaching his 92nd birthday. He concludes this exhilarating program with Beethoven’s dance-infused Symphony No. 7.
“Garrick Ohlsson is a big pianist with a calmly commanding presence, and his performance in Brahms’s Piano Concerto No 1 in D minor sported those qualities in abundance. One could sense his artistic lineage... in the crystalline nobility of his sound; in the Adagio the melody floated dreamily along over its spare accompaniment, while the Rondo flew swift and sure.”
