What Is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?
The CO2 laser is a carbon dioxide laser used for the purpose of skin resurfacing. CO2 Laser Resurfacing is extremely advanced laser technology utilized to precisely remove the outer layers of our damaged skin due to acne, scarring, sun damage or hyperpigmentation. Removing the outer layer of damaged skin reveals the underlying new skin which is smoother, softer, clearer, and younger looking.

Benefits of CO2 Laser Resurfacing

CO2 Laser Resurfacing has many benefits. Not only does it result in clean, clear skin, it boosts self-confidence and eliminates awkward social anxiety related to our skin’s appearance. The benefits of CO2 Laser Resurfacing are as follows:

Outer layers of damaged skin are removed
New skin underneath is revealed
Skin is clearer and looks brighter
Blemishes are reduced or eliminated altogether
Fine lines and wrinkles are totally wiped out
Your face looks years younger and refreshed
How Is CO2 Laser Resurfacing Performed?
CO2 Laser Resurfacing requires the use of light beams that are either scattered at a very high rate or pulsed. This minimizes damage that can result from the heat. This technique also allows the more powerful CO2 laser to remove tissue more deeply for more dramatic results. This technology of laser skin resurfacing allows the treatment to result in some of the most amazing anti-aging results available.

During skin resurfacing using a CO2 laser, very short pulses (ultrapulses) of light energy are delivered to vaporize the upper layers of the skin. The energy emitted is controlled to precisely remove the skin with minimal damage. During the process, the skin’s collagen production is stimulated, leading to an enhanced structure and firmness of the skin.

Preparing for CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Since injections of anesthetic are administered to the sites being treated, a numbing cream may be used first to reduce the discomfort of the injections. You will have at least one consultation with Dr. Taghizadeh before the procedure to discuss your goals, desired results, and any concerns or questions you may have. On the day of your procedure, it is best not to wear any makeup of any kind or any jewelry. Wear comfortable clothing so that after the procedure you may return home to rest.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing Recovery

After CO2 Laser Resurfacing, the “wounded” area will be tender, pink, and swollen for several days. Using a cold pack will reduce post-op swelling and discomfort, as will NSAIDS such as ibuprofen or aspirin. As skin regrowth begins, your skin will remain red for several weeks. Proper care of the treated areas includes the following:

Rinse the skin many times throughout the day with cool water. This will help avoid infection and reduce the crusting that often happens. Avoid soap and anything with perfume in it.
Keep the treated area moist with ointment and fresh dressings to promote healing.
Since new skin is very vulnerable to sunburn, avoid sun exposure, and after all the peeling has stopped, you must use a sunscreen daily.
