Item Description
My work, over time, has become more gestural and intuitive; landscapes are almost always complete abstractions. I never agonize over composition, I just start working and adjust as I go. I have always gravitated toward figurative painting. I love to watch people. Their gestures and mannerisms are absolutely fascinating to me. My goal is to capture an everyday moment through posture and prop, an emotion through color and composition.
Happiness for me is going into my studio, turning on music and mixing paint. I like working on large canvases because I enjoy the physicality of the process as much as the actual outcome. Mixing colors, using broad brushstrokes and playing with composition are the rewards for me. Spontaneity is paramount.
Most of my models are actually myself playing the role of whomever it is I want to paint that day. When there is interesting light coming through a certain window or doorway I grab my wig, tripod and camera. I can be in my studio painting in a matter of minutes. My husband teases me that I should have been an actress as I'm always shifting in and out of roles I create for a certain moment. Perhaps that's why this process of photographing my alternate self has come so naturally to me.
