Item Description

This Tiffany & Co. Congressional Plate of the 109th Congress is signed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.

The elegant motifs displayed on this commemorative plate are taken from the historic Lyndon B. Johnson Room and other interiors of the United States Capitol.  the images, rich with symbolism, take inspiration from 19th-century frescoes by artist Constantino Brumidi.  Brumidi spent 25 yers embellishing the Capitol's interiors, and in 1857 he embarked upon design for the LBJ Room--then intended to house the Senate Library

The centerpiece of the plate, a red, white, and blue shield, replicates four shield prominent in the LBJ Room's elaborate ceiling.  In 1782, an act of Congress created the Great Seal of the United States and the shield became part of the official heraldry of the United States.  The shield's azure chief represents Congress, and it united the thirteen red and white stripes, representing the original colonies standing as one.

The wreath gently enfolding the shield is an assemblage of symbolic oak branches, oak leaves, and acorns--motifs that decorate the walls of the LBJ Room as well as the Capitol's exterior bronze doors.

The eight star motifs along the border of the plate are taken directly from the stars found on the LBJ Room's vaulted ceiling. The laurel leaf design around the rim of the plate is replicated from a detail of the gold-leaf frame of the painting The Recall of Columbus, painted by Philadelphia-born artist Augustus Heaton.
