Diminutive and chunky, the ruddy duck has been nicknamed the butterball. Like most ducks, the ruddy drake undergoes a regular change of plumage, molting his drab winter feathers around March of each year and developing his rich red-brown breeding plumage.

While drakes of other species abandon their family as soon as the female begins incubating, ruddies often protect and provide for their broods, sometimes remaining with them through the entire period when the ducklings are covered with down.

A pair of Ruddies are featured on the 2015-16 Federal Duck Stamp.
