Item Description

This auction item is for a hand painted canvas by CURE Artist Nina Thomson, "Don't Stop Believing".

Nina was diagnosed with 3rd stage, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma when she was in third grade. Her mother noticed a small, swollen lymph node that appeared on the left side of her neck, just below her jawline, in August of 2011 – when Nina was 8 years old. Nina was treated with four cycles of chemotherapy, but had many complications, and because of the complications she was admitted to the hospital, after each treatment cycle, for at least a week.  After the four cycles of chemo treatments were completed, Nina had no evidence of cancer any longer, but after only three months, her mother noticed another swollen lymph node, behind her left ear, this time. The results of a MRI and biopsy showed that Nina had relapsed and again had Hodgkins Lymphoma.  She then began eight cycles of chemo therapy using a new and recently developed medication.  However, both radiation and a bone marrow transplant, standard treatments for a relapse, were not suggested at that time (due to an unusual skin condition).  But, her stem cells were harvested and stored. The second regimen of eight cycles of chemotherapy took approximately seven months to complete. After she completed all eight of the chemotherapy cycles her follow-up tests have continued to show no signs of cancer relapse.  Nina has now been cancer free for one year and nine months; and she is a truly an amazing girl who looks forward to having a long life, full of lots of fun!
